These still lives were created as exercises for freshman painting students. I teach photography across the hall from the painting studio, and each semester I see the same collection of quirky objects being transformed into new tabletop tableau. I am purposefully creating an ironic yet historical dialogue between my compositions and the Baroque still life tradition. Even though the objects in my still lives are disposable, thrift store items that have been collected and reused, the recurring motifs – cones, boxes, cylinders, spheres – hold the same symbolism as the precious items featured in historical paintings.
